With the increase of literacy during the flourishing of the Renaissance, Writing Masters taught burgeoning scribes the art of handwriting. Italic writing reached its zenith in the 16th century.
By that time manuals or ‘copybooks’ were being cut in woodblocks or engraved and then printed, in order to reach a wider audience. However, one of the finest examples of such a copybook was a single handwritten manuscript of 26 leaves prepared by Bernardino Cataneo in 1545. |
This Cataneo Manuscript will be the basis of a two day workshop pitched to people near the start of their calligraphic journey. We will explore how to learn from an historical exemplar in a step by step manner. It would also be suitable for more experienced calligraphers as an opportunity to revisit Cataneo’s beautiful ‘cancellaresca formata’ script with many exercises to extend your repertoire of variations.
Everyone will develop their own Italic Copybook containing your own workshop pages plus samples from Cataneo’s book along with other Writing Masters from which to draw future inspiration. |
