Working the grid with Gemma Black

By looking deeper into the structure of those writing masters who have preceded us, we will use their methods as an alternative way to create our texts. From where we are now, we will spend the weekend looking at the idea of planning our work using text blocks with a grid construction – working with few constraints of line drawing and
height barriers.

This method allows our letters and words to come alive on the page. We will use this method not to just copy the past but create more contemporary works, using their system. Our letterform of choice to demonstrate the working of the grid, will be the blackletter Fraktur.
