Although Calligraphy literally translates as ‘Beautiful Writing’ – which indeed it is, there is a whole lot more to it than just picking up a pen and starting to write.
This class will assume no prior experience on the part of the student, and will focus, not only on correct letter shapes and proportions, but will closely look at pen angles used, letter height and the spacing between letters, within a word, between words and between each line of writing. Modern Italic is a wonderfully versatile script that can be applied in so many ways.
After a very brief introduction to the history of Italic, and its place within all the wonderful styles we use today, we will mostly concentrate on the lowercase (minuscule) letters, pen angles and spacing.
If time permits we will look at simple capital letters (majuscules) before possibly combining the two into a small finished piece of work. The knowledge gained today will allow participants to move with confidence to other scripts, as the general principles of construction do not alter.
This workshop will cater to all levels of experience, whether you are new to calligraphy or are simply rusty from not picking up a pen for some time.
Please note that this workshop is not a ‘lead in’ to the Italic workshop Manny Ling is offering in October, although if you feel like a bit of extra practice will do no harm, please feel free to join in.
