Elaine Witton: Hidden Alphabet
Founded in 1980, the Australian Society of Calligraphers is an active group of lettering artists of all skills, from enthusiastic beginners to professionals and even some who simply appreciate lettering and book arts.
Based in Sydney, we have members from all over Australia and overseas. The Society is a nonprofit, incorporated association that promotes and encourages calligraphy, hand lettering and other related crafts. Membership is open to anyone regardless of their calligraphic ability.
Our highly respected magazine ‘Colophon’ is published quarterly and contains articles of special interest to calligraphers as well as news of events and details of future workshops.
The Society offers a range of monthly 1 or 2 day weekend workshops on specialist topics for all skill levels. Our tutors include the finest calligraphers in Australia as well as visiting overseas tutors.
The Society’s Library has an extensive range of books and periodicals from traditional to contemporary calligraphy and hand lettering. The library can be accessed by ASC members on workshop days and also by mail order.
The ASC supports and encourages all members to fulfill their calligraphic aspirations.
The ASC aim to promote calligraphy through staged exhibitions, practical demonstrations at various shows and exhibitions as well as through hosting talks by visiting guest calligraphers.
The Committee of the Society is elected at the Annual General Meeting held each year around September. The Committee meets bimonthly and is responsible for managing the affairs of the Society.
The ASC is located at Primrose Park Art & Craft Centre, Cremorne (at the end of Matora Lane, off Young Street). This is also where most of our workshops are held.
Did you know?
Primrose Park Art & Craft Centre:
Originally an estuarine bay, in 1899 the land on which the sportsfields now stand became the site of North Sydney’s first sewage treatment works. The sewage works closed in the late 1920s and the area was dedicated as parkland in 1930. The Park was named after HL Primrose, Mayor of North Sydney from 1926 to 1932, and later NSW Minister for Health.
Get the most out of your Society
All members of the ASC are invited to participate in committee meetings, held every two months on a Saturday afternoon at the Primrose Park Arts Centre.
Come and establish friendships with other members, explore new ideas or just have fun. Bring along any works in progress that you may like to discuss, or ideas you’d like to share. The library will also be open during these sessions.
